Vegan Baked Beans PinThis Vegan Baked Beans recipe (or BBQ Baked Beans) is absolutely delicious! It’s sweet, savory and spicy, but it also has a LOT of sugar, so do your best not to eat all of it in one sitting!

For a 1/2 cup serving, there are 207 calories with 92 coming from sugar. It has 23 grams of sugar (still far less than a can of soda), which is more than half of the recommended daily value. That means this is NOT a health food recipe. It’s meant to be a treat on a special occasion (like Labor Day) or a family event when you want to show people how good vegan food can taste. If you’re currently a diabetic, you should definitely not eat these beans!

While this recipe does have a lot of sugar, it also has some healthy ingredients. The beans are loaded with protein and fiber, as well as calcium and iron. They’re also really low fat, with less than half a gram per serving. Our bodies are very efficient at burning carbs (including sugar) for energy, and they’re very efficient at storing fat for future use during times of famine (that most of us never have to experience). So if you’re in good shape, at your ideal body weight, and without diabetes, you can enjoy these Vegan Baked Beans knowing your body will know how to handle the carbs (it’ll probably make you feel like going for a long walk after dinner).

Most BBQ Baked Beans are made with lard and/or bacon, which obviously isn’t vegan or healthy (unless you live in upside-down world). However, you can achieve a similar taste by using liquid smoke. After all, that’s what gives bacon it’s flavor. Without liquid smoke and sometimes maple syrup or molasses, bacon would taste like bland, fatty meat…pretty much how all meat tastes without plants added for seasoning. But if the liquid smoke is too reminiscent of bacon for you, just skip it.

If you’re in the US, most liquid smoke and molasses aren’t vegan. That’s because they contain non-organic sugar, which is processed using the ground up bones of dead animals to give it a pretty white color. Sugar in most parts of the world has a tan hue, which tastes the same, it’s just not as superficially pretty. Look for “pure liquid smoke” without molasses. And look for vegan or organic molasses, or molasses made with organic sugar.

These Vegan Baked Beans pair well with any vegan burger, potato salad, corn-on-the-cob, green beans, or any of your favorite vegan recipes.

Vegan Black Bean Soup

Beans are a great source of protein, calcium and fiber. That’s why they’re such an important part of a plant-based diet. It can take your body a few weeks (or months) to adjust to the flatulence caused by beans in some people, but the short-term discomfort is well-worth the long-term health benefits.

Before we transitioned to a whole-food plant-based (WFPB) diet, I never ate beans because of the horrible stomach and intestinal discomfort. Within a few months of switching our diet, I slowly started adding beans into the mix. Now we eat them every day and only occasionally do they cause gas. I’ve found that red beans still seem to be the worst offenders, while black beans, chickpeas and lentils are now fine.

According to the Harvard Health Letter, “A little bit of extra flatulence could be an indication that you’re eating the way you should!” So if you accidentally let one slip while waiting in line at the bank, just smile and say “Hey. I’m plant-based.”

This Vegan Black Bean Soup pairs well with a salad or cornbread.

Real bacon is loaded with saturated fat and cholesterol. It’s one of the worst types of meat that people eat, and has been linked to cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses.

This Tofu Bacon tastes like bacon, but without the harmful ingredients (and cruelty). Bacon gets its distinctive flavor primarily from the liquid smoke that’s poured over it during the curing process. By using the same liquid smoke along with maple syrup in this recipe, you get the same flavor.  It’s really challenging not to eat the whole batch!

Smokey Green Hot Sauce

Smokey Green Hot Sauce PinThis Smokey Green Hot Sauce is a delicious and spicy way to save money. Hot sauce is freaking expensive!

We were spending $10 a week on hot sauce and salsa since we started using them as flavorful and healthy toppings for many of our dishes. A regular 16oz jar of salsa or a 6oz bottle of hot sauce goes for $3 to $5. This recipe makes about 24oz and costs less than 4$ to make!

This smokey green hot sauce is a good topping for your Easy Tofu Scramble, Boiled Potatoes, Baked Potatoes, Vegan Chili or any other dish that needs a little extra spice. You can also use it as a dip for your Corn Tortilla Corn Chips.

If you want to make it extra spicy, add one or two small habanero peppers during Step 1. It might induce a little sweat when you eat it, but it’s absolutely delicious!

I’m not gonna lie. I was highly skeptical of these Carrot Dogs when Amelia pitched them to me. I mean really…how can a carrot replace a hotdog?

Well, they can and I’m happy to admit that I had to eat some vegan crow. These carrot dogs are delicious! And they taste just like a real hotdog!

Growing up, hotdogs were a mainstay in my summer diet routine. After hours of fishing and swimming on Gardner Lake in Kansas, I would venture indoors in the heat of summer, microwave myself a hotdog and watch Beverly Hillbilly reruns in the air conditioning while I ate my lunch. It was quite the idyllic childhood.

As an adult prior to going vegan, I rarely ate hotdogs. Once I found out what was in them and how bad they are for your health, I couldn’t justify them any longer. But thanks to these carrot dogs, I get to eat my delicious dogs once again! Thank you Amelia!

We used regular orange carrots for the video, but we’ve also used purple carrots and we liked them better. They’re not always available, though. We also used Whole Foods 365 Whole Wheat Hot Dog Buns.

These would pair well with our Oven Roasted Red Potatoes.

Vegan Chili

Soy Free Vegan ChiliA hot bowl of vegan chili on a cold day is the best way to warm your bones. This vegan chili is a traditional tomato chili with “meat” and beans. The taste and texture of the Beyond Meat Beefy Crumbles is just like ground beef, so you won’t be able to tell any difference.

We used fire-roasted chopped tomatoes for a little extra flavor in our vegan chili. However, you can use regular chopped tomatoes or you can even cut up some fresh tomatoes.

If you’re in a hurry, you can buy a chili seasoning packet, but making your own chili tastes so much better.

It’s a challenge finding vegan crackers, but if you can locate some, they’ll go well crumbled up in the bowl.

Vegan Green Beans with Bacon Flavor

Vegan Green Beans PinThese vegan green beans are cooked with liquid smoke to approximate a bacon flavor. This vegan trick makes things taste like bacon without using bacon.

Bacon tastes like bacon because it’s rinsed with liquid smoke during the curing process. When you add liquid smoke to recipes, you’re adding the bacon flavor without harming animals to get it.

This recipe uses fresh green beans, but if you can’t find any or you’re in a hurry, you can use 3 cans of cut green beans instead. Just omit the water and vegetable broth, and cook the green beans in their own juices.

Use all natural liquid smoke to be fully vegan. Most liquid smoke brands contain molasses, which is made with non-organic sugar processed with animal bone char.

We used regular vegetable broth, but you can use low-sodium broth. You might want an extra 1/2 tsp of salt if you do that.

Simple and easy, these vegan green beans with bacon flavor are one of my favorite veggie recipes.
