Vegan Baked Beans PinThis Vegan Baked Beans recipe (or BBQ Baked Beans) is absolutely delicious! It’s sweet, savory and spicy, but it also has a LOT of sugar, so do your best not to eat all of it in one sitting!

For a 1/2 cup serving, there are 207 calories with 92 coming from sugar. It has 23 grams of sugar (still far less than a can of soda), which is more than half of the recommended daily value. That means this is NOT a health food recipe. It’s meant to be a treat on a special occasion (like Labor Day) or a family event when you want to show people how good vegan food can taste. If you’re currently a diabetic, you should definitely not eat these beans!

While this recipe does have a lot of sugar, it also has some healthy ingredients. The beans are loaded with protein and fiber, as well as calcium and iron. They’re also really low fat, with less than half a gram per serving. Our bodies are very efficient at burning carbs (including sugar) for energy, and they’re very efficient at storing fat for future use during times of famine (that most of us never have to experience). So if you’re in good shape, at your ideal body weight, and without diabetes, you can enjoy these Vegan Baked Beans knowing your body will know how to handle the carbs (it’ll probably make you feel like going for a long walk after dinner).

Most BBQ Baked Beans are made with lard and/or bacon, which obviously isn’t vegan or healthy (unless you live in upside-down world). However, you can achieve a similar taste by using liquid smoke. After all, that’s what gives bacon it’s flavor. Without liquid smoke and sometimes maple syrup or molasses, bacon would taste like bland, fatty meat…pretty much how all meat tastes without plants added for seasoning. But if the liquid smoke is too reminiscent of bacon for you, just skip it.

If you’re in the US, most liquid smoke and molasses aren’t vegan. That’s because they contain non-organic sugar, which is processed using the ground up bones of dead animals to give it a pretty white color. Sugar in most parts of the world has a tan hue, which tastes the same, it’s just not as superficially pretty. Look for “pure liquid smoke” without molasses. And look for vegan or organic molasses, or molasses made with organic sugar.

These Vegan Baked Beans pair well with any vegan burger, potato salad, corn-on-the-cob, green beans, or any of your favorite vegan recipes.

Jackfruit Crab Cakes

Jackfruit Crab Cakes PinThese Jackfruit Crab Cakes are a savory substitute for conventional crab cakes. Jackfruit has a mild flavor that takes on the flavors of your seasonings so it’s a good replacement for most types of shredded meat.

The dried seaweed is the key to achieving a seafood flavor and aroma so don’t skip it. We found it in the Asian foods section of our Natural Grocers, and I know Whole Foods carries it too.

The Old Bay seasoning was more difficult to find. We finally found it at a small Asian grocery store not to far from our house. I guess that’s not a popular seasoning in the Denver metro. It’s probably much easier to find in other parts of the country.

Amelia made some delicious Thai Style Sweet and Spicy Sauce to go with these, but you can use your favorite non-dairy condiment.

Red Bean Burgers

Red Bean Burgers PinThis Red Bean Burgers recipe is very flavorful and satisfying. It’s a delicious and nutritious vegan burger that’s super quick and easy to make. Perfect for a weeknight meal when you’re short on time but long on hunger.

The burger patties are very moist so they won’t do well on the grill, but they great on an electric griddle if you have one. We usually just bake them, though. They’re very flavorful as is, but you can sprinkle the patties with a little garlic salt and black pepper before you cook them for even more flavor.

We like high quality, whole grain buns, but you can use your favorite hamburger buns. Top them with some greens, a slice of tomato and a little spicy mustard or ketchup and you’ve got one delicious vegan burger!

Vegan BBQ Sauce

Vegan BBQ Sauce PinThis Vegan BBQ Sauce is thick, sweet, spicy and a little sweat inducing. It reminds me of the BBQ sauce I grew up eating in Kansas City. I guess that makes it a Kansas City style BBQ sauce.

We made this specifically for our BBQ Jackfruit, but it’ll go well on any type of BBQ dish if you like KC-style BBQ. It even tastes great as a topping on Baked or Boiled Potatoes, or as a dipping sauce for your Vegan French Fries.

We like our BBQ sauce thick, but you can add a little extra water if you like yours thinner. If it’s too spicy for you, cut back on the black pepper a little.

We used our Vegan Ketchup recipe to minimize the calories, preservatives and potentially non-vegan ingredients.

Vegan Sloppy Joes

Vegan Sloppy Joes PinThese Vegan Sloppy Joes are loaded with 16g protein thanks to the lentils, and they taste just like the Sloppy Joes I had as a kid. To be honest, though, I didn’t like sloppy joes as a kid. But loved them as an adult.

You could make these with Beyond Meat Beefy Crumbles. That would be delicious, but we prefer to stick to whole-foods whenever possible and the lentils are perfect for this recipe.

We ate ours the old fashioned way: on a bun. But they would taste great over pasta, Spaghetti Squash and especially over some Boiled Potatoes.

As a side dish, some Vegan French Fries and Green Beans would be very tasty!

Tofu Bacon

Tofu Bacon PinThis Tofu Bacon recipe is simple to prepare but tastes just like bacon. It’s perfect for your Vegan BLT or as a side dish for your Vegan Pancakes.

Real bacon is loaded with saturated fat and cholesterol. It’s one of the worst types of meat that people eat, and has been linked to cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses.

This Tofu Bacon tastes like bacon, but without the harmful ingredients (and cruelty). Bacon gets its distinctive flavor primarily from the liquid smoke that’s poured over it during the curing process. By using the same liquid smoke along with maple syrup in this recipe, you get the same flavor.  It’s really challenging not to eat the whole batch!

Vegan Stuffed Peppers

Vegan Stuffed Peppers PinThese Vegan Stuffed Peppers are amazing! Thanks to the lentils, the look, taste and texture are almost identical to traditional stuffed peppers made with ground beef. I bet you can fool people if you don’t tell them it’s vegan.

Stuffed peppers are loved around the world with slight variations in the recipes. If you come from an area that uses cheese, you can melt some Daiya on top of the peppers or sprinkle with some Nutritional Yeast.

You can also make these with Beefy Crumbles from Beyond Meat instead of using lentils. However, Daiya and Beyond Meat are both processed foods so they’re not as healthy as the whole plant alternatives.

This recipe calls for Grandpa’s Vegan Dipping Hot Sauce and Vegan Cashew Cream so you’ll either need to make these ahead of time or substitute them with a prepackaged alternative.

You can make a meal out of these, but they also pair well with Healthy Butternut Squash, a Side Salad, a slice of Whole Grain Bread, Steamed Broccoli or your other favorite side dishes.

Vegan Lentil Loaf

Vegan Lentil Loaf PinThis Vegan Lentil Loaf is a veganized version of the ever popular meatloaf. The lentils, brown rice and oats make this a hearty and nutritious meal while the generous amount of seasonings give it tons of flavor.

My mom’s meatloaf has always been one of my favorite dishes so after going vegan, it was something I really missed. Thankfully, Amelia figured out how to make a veganized version of meatloaf that tastes a lot like mom’s. That’s one more thing that was easily replaced with a cruelty free, healthy and environmentally friendly alternative!

This recipe pairs well with Green Beans, a Side Salad or Steamed Broccoli for your green dish. To make the meal even more filling without adding a lot of extra calories, try our Easy Polenta recipe, a Vegan Baked Potato or Boiled Potatoes.

Vegan Mushroom Stroganoff

Mushroom Stroganoff has long been one of my favorite guilty pleasures. The rich, brown gravy loaded with hearty mushrooms and poured over a bed of pasta is hard to beat.

That’s why I was so happy when Amelia concocted this recipe after months of me nagging her about it. And let me tell you…it does NOT disappoint! Feed this to your non-vegan friends and they’ll never know! Woohahahaha!!!

Remember to make the Vegan Cashew Sour Cream ahead of time.

Corn Starch Trick

Corn starch has long been a pain in the rear in my cooking. It doesn’t seem to matter how you do it. We even looked online for the best way and everyone said the same thing: slowly add the corn starch to your broth mixture over medium heat and whisk continuously to combine. One said to combine it with cold water first and then slowly add the cold water mixture to the broth. Well, it doesn’t combine, dry or wet. It clumps!

I was really unhappy with the clumping and after 10 minutes of trying to break up the clumps, I threw it in the sink and told Amelia there had to be a better way. Here’s what I figured out and it didn’t clump!

Whisk the corn starch into cold vegetable broth before heating it up. The corn starch completely dissolves in the broth so when you heat it, there are no clumps to bust up.

I’m sure someone has figured this out already, however, it doesn’t appear to be the standard way of doing it, but it works 100 times better.

Vegan Black Bean Burgers

Vegan Black Bean Burgers PinThese Vegan Black Bean Burgers are quick and easy to make, but it’s also filling and delicious. Tastes great on a whole grain bun with Swiss chard, a slice of tomato and spicy mustard.

The texture and consistency of the patties is a lot like ground beef. We baked them in the oven, but you could easily throw them on the grill to get some of that extra smoky flavor or fry them in a skillet if you’re not concerned with keeping them oil free.

You can make up a batch of these and keep them in the refrigerator for several days. Since they’re not made of meat, they won’t spoil or stink up your fridge. You can even individually freeze them and pull out one or two at a time.
